I'm not sure how to react to all of this other than to offer this statement.  In September 11, 2001 the united states experienced a similar terrorist attack.  I don't recall any effort of our country to either bomb civilian structures nor starve the country into subservience in the 10 years we fought there.   I will concede there were problems with contractors and such but we didn't try to starve anyone nor blow up their infrastructure because as i recall we were actively spending billions of dollars in that country. Even though Hamas uses tactics like building tunnels underground and hiding among civilians, the civilian death rate is reportedly under 5%. 	2.	Causing serious bodily or mental harm (Art. II(b))

The same MoH tally shows 132,239 injured, many suffering amputations, burns, permanent disabilities and deep psychological trauma. A UN Commission of Inquiry documented widespread torture, sexual violence, forced public stripping and threats of rape used by Israeli forces against Palestinians—methods amounting to systematic infliction of bodily and mental harm (Independent International Commission of Inquiry report A/HRC/56/26, 19 Jun 2024).

	3.	Deliberately inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about physical destruction (Art. II(c))

Israel’s total blockade has crippled Gaza’s infrastructure: only 40 per cent of water facilities remain functional, 93 per cent of households face water insecurity, and families survive on one nutritionally inadequate meal per day amid fuel cuts that shut down hospitals and bakeries (OCHA SitRep #300, 26 Jun 2025).

	4.	Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group (Art. II(d))

A UN-mandated investigation found that Israeli strikes have systematically destroyed maternity wards, neonatal units and reproductive-health clinics, while the siege blocks essential medicines and supplies for childbirth—measures aimed at preventing births among Palestinians in Gaza (Attacks on health facilities during the Gaza war, Wikipedia § 2.6).

	5.	Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group (Art. II(e))

In May 2025, 17 Gaza children who had flown to Jordan for critical surgeries were sent back to Gaza against families’ wishes—an act human-rights experts warn violates international law’s prohibition on returning children to life-threatening conditions, effectively a forcible transfer of children (AP News, 15 May 2025).

	6.	Genocidal intent

	•	In January 2024 the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in South Africa v. Israel ordered provisional measures because it found a “plausible risk of genocide” and required Israel to “prevent and punish” genocidal acts in Gaza (ICJ Order, 26 Jan 2024).

	•	The UN Inquiry also concluded that Israeli actions constitute “extermination of Palestinians” and “gender persecution targeting Palestinian men and boys,” undertaken to destroy the group (Independent International Commission of Inquiry report A/HRC/56/26, 19 Jun 2024).

Taken together, the systematic killing and maiming of civilians, the deliberate creation of life-destroying conditions, targeted attacks on reproduction, the forced return of children to a war zone, and the demonstrated intent to eradicate Palestinians all fulfill the elements of genocide under the Genocide Convention.

War crimes are not the same as genocide. The testimonies describe it well, they use live rounds to manage a crowd that would otherwise spiral out of control. This certainly violates human rights but is still rather common in extreme situations and has nothing to do with genocide. They don't systematically fire mag after mag into the crowd with the intention to kill those people, they just don't respect their lives enough to use proper control measures.

Genocide is a specific category of crime. I won’t deny the IDF and the government have committed war crimes in the Gaza Strip and elsewhere. There is plenty of evidence for that. But I haven’t seen any indication that Israel has a policy of destroying Palestinians collectively as a group, in fact considering how much control they have over the Gaza Strip, you would expect them to take more large scale and extreme measures if there was a policy of genocide in place and there isn’t really that much stopping them from doing it politically. They already lost the PR game, they could just give dubious reasons for taking these measures and nothing would change. So there is just not. And even the experts that say there is always note that for there to actually be a case for legal genocide, the standards would need to be lowered than is traditional in case law. That doesn’t mean Israel is in the right here, but you can’t just throw around the word genocide whenever there are human rights abuses going on, this is something I’ve seen lefties do in the past five years and it really poisons political discourse.

It’s worth noting that Omer Bartov is Israeli, and also *extremely* well-respected as a scholar. I’ve personally run into his work as someone who reads WWII Eastern Front history as a hobby (yes, I know how that sounds). That isn’t exactly his field, but due to the rampant genocidal acts occurring between Germany and Russia in the 20th century, you cannot read any history of the area set in that time without seeing a lot of citations of Bartov’s work. I think this sparked a heated discourse on /r/neoliberal (and certainly elsewhere) precisely because it’s extremely damning for your side to have Omer Bartov weigh in against you, especially when you’re his home country.

Here’s an archived link of the article that everyone should actually read first before commenting. The author specifically addresses the difference between “a lot of people dying” and “genocide” as well as “ethnic cleansing” and “genocide”.

Personally I find it hard to argue that it isn’t a genocide, but part of what I hate about this discussion is that it usually misses the bigger picture questions when people try to defend Israel’s actions:

If you believed a genocide was occurring, would you denounce and refuse to further support Israel? If not, what would it take if anything?

Not that the conversation about what constitutes a genocide isn’t important, but the larger issue is a worrying number of people have already decided they don’t have any choice but support Israel unconditionally. And they don’t want to deal with the cognitive dissonance of supporting genocide while citing the Holocaust as their justification.

I truly have no idea what the future of Israel looks like. I shudder at what the future of Palestinians hold. The only path forward for peace that I can see is that the upcoming generation of Israelis radically change what the state of Israel actually looks like, and considers and includes Palestinians in that vision. We’ll see if this is to young Israelis as to what the Global War on Terror was to young Americans.

1. Even if you consider Ashkenazi Jews "white" - though, for most of history, ~~no one did~~ many did not - the majority of Israel's Jews are not Ashkenazi, but are Mizraḥi, i.e. come from communities that hail from the Middle East and North Africa.
2. This doesn't account for the Armenian Genocide, which was committed by Turks, who are typically thought of in the West as "non-white," against Armenians, who are typically thought of in the West as white (so per the US census, anyway, if I'm not mistaken). People bring it up all the time, even though it wasn't committed by a "white" ethnic group, and was in fact committed *against* a "white" ethnic group.

How many of those other genocides would be relevant to people who genuinely don't know the history of those regions and conflicts?

There is no reluctance in the media to present POC as bad, as can be seen by the disproportionate mainstream coverage of what Hamas did, compared to Israel.

The Cambodian genocide "hidden completely"? That's going to come as a surprise to anybody who's ever seen "The Killing Fields" or visited the S-21 memorial site in Phnom Penh. In fact, from my personal observation of the world in general and social media in particular the Khmer Rouge reign of terror is one of the most widely discussed large-scale atrocities of the Cold War era.

I mean, Saudi Arabia has been committing war crimes with our support for the last 10 years in Yemen, and it barely gets covered in the news.

The idea that we’re not allowed to say people of color are bad in our culture is pretty hilarious, since one political party basically runs on that premise.

I saw somebody else mention the Armenian genocide, but it’s a pretty commonly mention thing in America, alongside the Rwandan genocide, Japan’s actions in Korea and China during World War II, etc.

I mean, the Romani were genocided alongside the Jews during the holocaust, and we don’t even hear about that.

It’s less an issue of color, and more issue of proximity to hegemony. And with Israel in particular, they’ve been committing war crimes in this conflict for like 70 years.

The genocide in Palestine is currently ongoing and the Holocaust is used as a justification for it, so there's kind of a reason for that.

The Rwandan genocide is in almost every textbook it feels like, it would certainly come up not that far behind the holocaust and in some areas like latin america maybe more than the paralell European yugoslav wars.

The Cambodian genocide is ample mentioned and some of those pop history things you are atleast supposed to have heard the title of. It is far more known that Soviet ethnic cleansing.

Myabmar became quite talked about specially because of the role of Facebook in the country help the government kill the rohynga. 

These examples contrast how "white perpetrators" didn't really give it much fame. 

The origin of most NGOs and understanding of regular people helping out faraway victims began with the biafra conflict, when Nigeria starved 2 million people and compared to the Nazis. It was massively talked about in the 1960s.

Most of the "white" genocides are not covered either - 

Bengal genocide (famine) of 1943: Often mislabeled as a famine, but it was the intentional starvation by the British since they did not want to cut off their revenue streams during the war

The Congo Free State genocide (named "atrocities") under Leopold's regime, a similar story. 

The genocides in China by the Japanese, etc. 

If anything, white people get away with more. No other country would have survived labelling the likes of Churchill as national heroes.  

What makes these two genocides stand out is not who the perpetrators are, but the victims. The victims of the two genocides belong to two of the strongest lobby groups in global politics.

There are three groups that the global diaspora doesn't care about at all - the Africans, the South Asians, and the "poorer" east asians (not including Japan, Korea, and parts of China). Racism and hate against these groups is not just accepted, but even encouraged in several countries. All the victims in the genocide you mentioned, and the genocides I mentioned, belong to these groups.

Your sample size is two. One is regarded as the worst ever and one is the longest running conflict. You cannot conclude anything from that except that the most famous conflicts are the most famous.

Look up the genocides made by the British in India (the most famous being Jallianwala bagh). They were most definitely white but most of the world does not know about it. It's not about a genocide being known only because it was committed by white people and I wouldn't quite say Israelis are white either.


Holocaust is the only genocide that is know by most people around the world because it was committed by one of the worst dictators in the last century during arguably the biggest conflict in the last century (ww2). 


Your claim makes no sense because you cite two genocides while one is ongoing and we have no idea if it would be taught in schools a few decades laters across the globe like the Holocaust.
